80-Hour Class B CDL Training Course

Course Overview

The 80 Hour Class B CDL Course is designed to teach students the basic operations of a box truck with a six-speed manual transmission with air brakes. A Class B CDL is necessary to operate any single vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more and a towing capacity of no more than 10,000 pounds. Class B vehicles do not typically have a trailer attached.

This course includes 40 hours of classroom instruction. During the classroom segment, students will learn how to obtain their Class B CDL permit with air brakes, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, electronic and paper logbooks, map reading, compliance safety and accountability, as well as FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse registration.

Students will learn how to properly perform a pre-trip safety inspection of the vehicle and learn the basic control skills associated with the state of Michigan CDL exam. This includes straight line backing, off-set backing, and 90-degree backing skills.

Additionally, students will be taught how to safely operate on public roadways. This includes city and highway operations, hazardous perceptions, speed and space management, lane control, sign identification, and learning maximum bridge heights for Class B commercial vehicles.

Upon completion of this course and successfully passing the state exam, students will possess an unrestricted Class B CDL.
